Not so long ago I saw dodgy shag coasters at a major local grocery chain down here in Australia....on further inspection I noticed they were mass produced (or should I say mass ripped off) from China. My sister-in-law actually bought a set, unknowingly, because they looked
"kool"......she had never heard of Shag beforeI I later found out Outre gallery here in Oz who represent Shag and Ryden etc. did their best to put a stop to the importation of them!

While searchin for tiki mugs on ebay a few days ago I came across Mark Ryden's piece "Tiki God" being offered as an iron on transfer. On further inspection I realised this was not only an unauthorised item, they hadn't even given the artist any credit! I immediately contacted the seller and explained that it was wrong and a breach of copywright. They replied saying they had purchased the item "unaware"......but the story did'nt wash with me because they also offered an enlarging service and in their "sellers other items" had several more very familiar designs on offer!

Anyway, they basically were not too fazed by my concerns and the item continues to be listed! Ya' see this shit really pisses me off, being an artist myself. I'd like to know your thoughts on this matter of shamefully copying & profiting from others hard work?

Orphan Works Act of 2008
http://youtube.com/watch?v=CqBZd0cP5Yc

On April 24, Senators Pat Leahy (D-VT) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Representatives Howard Berman (D-CA), John Conyers (D-MI) and Lamar Smith (R-TX) introduced legislation (S.2913, HR 5889), which is now being referred to as the Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008. It is virtually the same bill that was presented in 2006, and subsequently rejected by Congress. But now, they are trying again.

If passed, the Act would radically alter copyright laws, taking away the automatic copyright now guaranteed to artists of all types who create any type of work. Right now, under U.S. law, artists are automatically guaranteed copyright on everything they create, from the sketches in their sketchpad to their best paintings and sculptures. Under the Orphan Works Act, every creator will be required to register everything he or she creates in a private registry system, requiring a fee of course, and supposedly to make it easier for the "public" to search for works and contact the creators if they want to use the works for some purpose.

Everything created in the last 30 years will need to be registered through this as-yet nonexistent system, including those works already registered via additional fees with the copyright office. If they aren't, and some member of the public makes "due diligence" to find the creator of a work and can't find him or her, that member of the public is entitled to use the work without any limitations, and artists will have no legal recourse. That means every piece of work artists have out there, especially online, would be open season for use by major publishing houses and businesses (Microsoft — who owns one of the largest online image databases — and Google have already voiced support for the bill and indicated they will use thousands of images) and everyone in between. Proponents of the bill say it will assist the public in identifying and contacting creators of works and going through the proper channels to contact them to ask for permission. While we understand the need for an organized system of search, there are MAJOR FLAWS in the proposed bill that need to be addressed before any such proposal should take place. Here are a few points:

Under this law, artists would need to register EVERY piece of work they create, including those works that you have already registered with the Copyright Office officially, in some system that does not exist and would likely require them to pay to do so. The time and cost to do this is going to be prohibitive for visual artists.

While this is meant to apply to all types of creative works, including music and literary, visual artists will be impacted the most because of the sheer volume of work they create, making it very expensive to register everything they have ever created or will create.

For the visual arts, there would still be little protection for them and their work, even if it is registered, because search tools would rely on names of artists or titles of work, and not image recognition tools, which are still in their infancy of development.

Under this law, if artists register their work, they would have to respond to EVERY inquiry sent to them for use of the work. So in other words, if an artist has a work out there in a registry system, and some person contacts the artist and says he or she wants to use the artist's work for free on his or her Web site or in his or her new catalog, the artist would need to take the time to officially respond to every inquiry within a specified time limit, letting him or her know if the artist doe not want to have him or her publish the artist's work for free. This will take a lot of time and effort that professional artists do not have.

Last week, the House Judiciary Committee unanimously approved the bill, and yesterday, May 15, the Senate Judiciary Committee did as well. This means the bill will be presented to Congress, likely before the end of May.

We need you to write to your representatives ASAP and let them know that you do NOT want this bill to be expedited, as it is now. Tell them we need a better solution, or tell them you don't want it at all: Just be sure to tell them something soon.

It's really a simple story Beings find planet. Beings treat planet badly. Planet goes about her business. Beings start to realize that they need planet, and had best learn to make friends rather than futilely keeping up enmity.

Gaea: A Ritual Performance

layers of imagery, music, tribal drums, futuristic dreams

Gaea was there, in the beginning. Gaea was all. Gaea was wise.
How could we not have seen, in the blindness of pride, of avarice,
of service pledged to false gods?

The journey was long.
The journey was cold.
The journey was lonely.

Asleep in a box with wilderness dreams. Or awake on the watch, wondering what was to come.

Thus it was those false gods bespake us: Out of the cold vastness of space and time,
out of the fear that was all the companion we knew,
out of a need to make it all Someone else's responsibility,
out of a need to believe all would be well for our kind.

Our planet was dying.
We did what we could to survive.
Survival we find
an appopriate end
to any means.
Survival will give us
the time we need
to find a better way
to survive.

The strongest of us,
the proudest of us,
the meanest of us,
would not allow us to die.
We took off in our ship with the barest of plans

to find another land
where our kind could live ...
expand.

Now,
hybrid children evolved
from refugees
fleeing a hostile star.
Skygods and Earth Mother of ancient lore.

It's time we relinquish fear and hatred, accept Gaea as partner and home
that we may all live and thrive.

The land, when we found her was so warm and inviting.
We felt safe, supported, encouraged to grow.

We ate of her fruit and her herds.
We built with her trees, stone and clay.
We drank from her cool crystal streams which we soiled with our waste.
Gaea was saviour and womb.
We repaid her with rape.

We didn't understand,
thought her merely land,
thought ourselves masters from afar.

Gaea sent storms to bring us to our senses, wild winds and seas.

Gaea tried to shake us off: Earthquakes, Floods, Famine, Plagues
sending us scattering into hiding. Intermingling with her primates, Gaea's children.
Without question or shame, we murdered what we could not steal.
Without honor or remorse, we laid waste to our host, to our adopted home,
then cursed her for not giving more.

By accident or design, chimera adapting to Gaea's marketplace creating
new ways to define our origins from outer space
We lied to our halfling children, denigrated their Gaean kin,
twisted their virtues into a false concept that we called "sin."

What Gaea did to us? Cruel, evil, in need of the whip.
we seal over her bounty
into mad parody of Mother Ship.
Unforgiving of the mess of living, the miracles of life.
In our ignorant pride we gave ourselves law to decide
propriety over fate
turning
in our minds
mother love
into a mirror of hate.

Frozen in fear and rage, children swept out in the storm,
trapped in a self-made cage we had hoped to protect us from harm.

Gaea, we cry, why do you treat us so angrily?
What will it take for us to wake up and see it is we who are wrong?
To hear and be aware of Gaea's song singing in our blood?
To learn the cycles, the seasons, the reasons for fire, wind and flood?

To redefine our race, to find out that our place is here among our Gaean kin?

The telling of new tale must begin.

Gaea opens to sunshine to ease our agitation
Easy winds, easy gushing of summer rain
Feeding the greedy young grains,
growing along the plains, the flowers of the storm.
Feeding the beasts of the field,
continuing the cycle, as all is revealed.

Love is the web,
craftily spun by great mother spider,
Gaea's familiar,
weaving magestic grace
no longer concealed. It was never our place
to control, nor others' to steal.

Gaea creates in intricate arrangements,
feeding us all of us all, a transformative stew.
So much energy wasted; painful lies to find our way through
our beings to create such beautiful
children, reaching out to become and be free,
enjoying our destiny,
as Gaea's beloved.

Arising in the circle, giving voice to pain -- grateful to Gaea's grace, dancing in her cleansing rain,
we sing in voice united:

It would be so nice (paradise)
You and I
Floating in the sunlight
Ready to break free
To be
Exactly who we are.
"Nameless Presence"
Works by Allyson Grey

On exhibit at MicroCoSM Gallery are the works of Allyson Grey, co-founder of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. For thirty years, Allyson has expressed in her paintings an essentialized world view consisting of three root components: chaos, order and secret writing. Chaos in these paintings symbolizes the material world where distinctions and entropy exist in all systems. Order in the work suggests the bliss realms one might experience in transcendental states of mystic unity sometimes called Nirvana, heaven, or the infinite Divine. Grey's secret writing is comprised of twenty unpronounceable letters, corresponding to the nameless presence, existent in all sacred writing, the spirit imbedded in communication that cannot be reduced to concepts. These oil paintings of tens of thousands of labor intensively painted spectral squares and a mystery language point to paradoxes of particles and waves, cells and systems, entropy and inter-reflectivity, meaning and the ineffable.

The inspiration for this focus came during a psychedelic journey in 1976. Allyson describes the event: "As I lay meditating next to Alex, I could see that our bodies had become infinite strands of light that were both a fountain and a drain, simultaneously individual and distinct, yet connected to all nodes in the network, blowing and sucking pure energy in an infinite field of confluent effluences. The energy was love, the unifying force. Witness to a revelation of the grid upon which the fabric of our material reality is draped, both of our art was forever changed." A description of the Hindu Jewel Net of Indra, relates strongly to this experience. In the abode of Indra, God of Space, a net stretches infinitely in all directions, and at every intersection of the net there is a jewel so highly polished and perfect that it reflects every other jewel in the net. A diptych oil painting entitled "Jewel Net of Indra", included in this exhibition, is Allyson's most reproduced work of art.

This exhibition at MicroCoSM Gallery includes paintings from the past ten years. Allyson's solo exhibitions in NYC include Stux Gallery, O.K. Harris Gallery, The Clocktower, with inclusion in exhibitions at White Columns, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The artist is credited with numerous large scale permanent public commissions and inclusion in dozens of corporations and private collections. An artist and writer all her life, Allyson received a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Tufts University. She has edited dozens of articles, journals and books, including those authored by Alex Grey, with whom she has been a constant companion and collaborator for over thirty years. Grey divides her energies between her own paintings, work for the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, the active career of her husband, Alex Grey, and the successful acting career of their daughter, Zena Grey.
To take part in AO|08 Go Here- http://www.artoutside.org/

Ladies and gentlemen of the art world, we are seeking any and all creative humans who use their skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others. That is, we are looking for those whose life is art, and everything they do is DIY. We are searching for those who are creating the Hand-Made Nation. We are calling !ALL! make-believers, dreamers and reality re-arrangers. We are searching hi and low for lowbrow-urban-contemporary-pop-surrealism, pop art, op art, hard-edge, lyrical abstraction, post minimalism, which might be interpreted by some to mean that we are looking only for painters, but that is most definitely not the case. For you see, of course, we need masters of typography, sketchers, illustrators, satirical stencilers, screen printing is way cool, and yes, you too, graffiti fools. Least we forget every culture jammer in the hood. Do you manipulate earth/land/sand/plants/junk into art? Then we have a home for you.

Now, we know some of you may be thinking “What about Dadas’ Dadaists, though?” To this we say, but of course we are calling all inspired by DADA- for where would art be without fluxists, productivism, neoplasticism, pittura, metafisica, arbeitsrat and bauhaus. Well, we are looking for all of “you” from then and now, if any of you still are around. And one may wonder… What about the cubists? We say, “But of course.” Conceptualists? Indeed. Installationists? Please! One might ask if we are seeking anything that might fall under postmodernist modernist who are not distracted by abstractionists and other IST’S. Of course there is always impressionism, post-minimalism, pre-contemporaryism, and expressionism. Are you working in symbolism or surrealism or any of the other -isms that we have not yet mentioned? Well come on out. But wait that’s not all, that could not possibly be all this call for ARTE is all about? Well, Dali you’re right,

This call goes out to all kinetic sculptors, fire sculptors, sound artists bending invisible waves, and video projectionists playing with light. We must invite the minds of the poets and their spoken slam voices, along with improv comedians who mimic the true history of time. Or was that the klown? How can we forget about the klowns! Mimes? Performers “performing” art, puppeteers with their puppets, musicians making sounds. Oh, and least we forget outsider artists wanting to be outside.

In short, we invite all the conceivable movements, modes, and theories of art known to wo/man kind. We say to you, the Artisans of the world who wish to unite because the world needs ART, because the world’s not right. It is time, Your window of opportunity is now. Our space is your blank canvas. Your dreams are our inspiration. You and your art are invited to take part in this epic artistic endeavor.

The world may be going to hell… So let’s make some art.
ph: 212-591-8841

"Net of Being"
New works by Alex Grey
November 10 – December 31
Opening - November 10, 2007 6 - 9pm

On exhibit at MicroCoSM Gallery are Grey's major new paintings including “Holy Family,” and "Net of Being," a fifteen-foot long oil painting introduced to millions by the rock band TOOL. After years of labor, this epic work is on view along with drawings that led to its creation. Related to Grey's series of painted and sculpted "universal beings," begun in 1999, the "Net of Being" portrays an endless perspective of column-like four-faced Godheads. Each head is composed of a fiery grid of eyes and galaxies linked with similar heads in an endless mesh, implying a realm of boundless interconnectedness. A new topology of Being and infinite awareness is mapped by this omni-directional web. Grey states that this visionary realm was visited during an entheogenic (psychedelic) ayahuasca journey he ex-
perienced in 2002. Small sculptural details of the Net of Being are also on view. “Net of Being” was featured on the cover of TOOL’s recent “10,000 Days” album, and the CD package won a 2007 Grammy Award.

Also on exhibit are models of the future Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, architecture designed by Alex Grey. The
entryway pavilion on the ground level is a wheel of 12 Godhead columns similar to those portrayed in the
painting "Net of Being." In the space between the heads nestle smaller replicas of the large domed Chapel.
Smaller Godheads and Chapel shapes repeat fractally, reaching tiny proportions that harmonically relate
to the overall pattern of the building. From every point of view on the grounds of this domed circular struc-
ture, observers witness two profiles mirroring each other, created by the outline of the building and implying
two giant celestial faces. The message encoded in the building is, “When beings come together in Oneness,
they create sacred space.”

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, being designed to house a permanent collection of
Grey's paintings and sculpture, is itself a profoundly inspiring sculpture for a timeless body of artwork.
Best known for his paintings which “X-ray” multiple dimensions of reality, Alex Grey's visual meditations
on the nature of life and consciousness, have led to a world renowned career of exhibitions from the New Mu-
seum in NYC, to Tokyo, to Sao Paulo, a retrospective at Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego, features
on Discovery Channel, Newsweek, Time, and album art for multi-platinum and Grammy award winning rock
bands such as Tool, Beastie Boys, and Nirvana. Because of his underground cult status in the psychedelic
world, his artwork is some of the most reproduced on sheets of blotter acid.

Alex Grey's art illuminates worlds of subtle energy and proposes new icons of trans-denominational spirituality. Along with his wife,
artist Allyson Grey, Alex co-founded the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, located in Chelsea, open for three
years, as a testing ground for the alliance of divinity, creativity, and community.

The intention of this work is to recognize and embrace the natural cycles of life, to arrange
our lives in collaboration with natural cycles, and in doing so, we can grow a greener, more
sustainable, integrated, and meaningful experience of our world. The Greenhouse Project
is intended to be an encounter that serves to reconnect and reawaken the participants to
take an active part in the universal, cyclical cycles of life. Through interaction, reflection,
and co-creation, the participants come to encounter themselves as part of the movement of
the Universe. When we awaken to the fact that we are collaborators with nature, we are
more effective in initiating and sustaining beneficial change in our world.

How can you get involved?

Contribute a 4-5 part series or a single piece of art in any medium, and spread the word!
I'm looking for any work that illustrates a natural process, however specifically or broadly
construed. The art could honor the elements, the seasons, any natural cycle involving
plants, water/rain, fire, etc., cycles of life, birth, and death, the passing of time, growth and
decay. Series in all mediums encouraged – paintings, sculptures, photographs, masks,
poems, found objects, natural things (rocks, flowers, plants, feathers) etc. Feel free to run
with it, cuddle with it, expand it, contract it, turn it upside down, inside out, tie it up, set it
free, whatever pleases you the most.

Art contributions made from recycled, reused, and natural materials are highly encouraged.

Other stuff needed:
exotic/tribal fabrics, sheer fabrics/scarves, prayer flags, extension cords, wind chimes, plant
pots, decorative containers, rocks, dried herbs, candles, candleholders, offering bowls,
bells, mirrors, christmas lights, el-wire, and any other miscellaneous items that fit with the
concept and spirit of the project.

Contribute NOW, in time for Flipside (www.burningflipside.com), or after
that, for Bonnaroo and Rainbow Gathering, or even after that,
for Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Play along at home and become a part of
the (r)evolution of this installation in its various incarnations. Stay tuned for a slideshow of
Let the PSD layers fly, don't be shy, contact your fellow vision holders and give this adventure a try. My greatest hope is that people will connect in this space, give each other a delicious taste, and give birth to new place, one created in joy and respect for each others grace.
Be grateful for each other, we are all sisters and brothers, and in our struggle to create art, we honor that which has given us life - the womb of all creation, the supreme galactic mother. So go ahead, reach out and remix someone, don't forget to spend every moment having fun, look into the future and set the dial on your ego to none, open your arms - and your minds, the endeavor to enlighten has just begun.

KLab9 Call for Contributions
From KnowledgeLab
KLab9:Art - Technology, Authorship and Ways of Living
A weekend gathering for collaborative and creative reflection. 5th - 7th October, 2007 tbc.
Institute for Advanced Studies, Lancaster University, North West England.

INTRODUCTION

The Knowledge Lab is an attempt to provide a collective space for anti-capitalist reflection. It is located at the margin of the university, an institution essentially geared towards the production of knowledge as a resource for corporate interest and as justification for particular constellations of power relations.
This knowledge lab will address art and ways of critically thinking about our world. Within this broad region of enquiry, the lab will encompass notions of life and art as a political commitment, the influence art can exert in politics and how political ideas in turn influence art. It will also address new ways of making art and how this relates to technologies and social changes, and the use of art as an anti-capitalist means to change and fight the system.

We hope that the knowledge lab will not merely address, but also show that art can initiate critical thinking in the various guises outlined above. Our expectations, in terms of the event, and its outcome, are that this be a sharing of creative ideas and ideas about creativity. We hope that it will draw together people with a common interest in art and alternative ways of living, but working in different fields. From this collective thinking we hope that people will be incited to realize, or make manifest, some of these ways of living and thinking creatively when they leave: We will learn from each other.

STREAMS

Like previous knowledge labs the day will be divided into four streams, each will take place in a separate room.

STREAM 1: TECHNOLOGY Free software, art spaces and interfaces, hardware, DIY and recycling/reusing.

STREAM 2: WAYS OF LIVING This stream concerns process, moment and performance. It is the political stream where we will consider primarily imaginative resistance and artivism, but also touch on debates surrounding gender issues, community and cultural production, and personal/political. We hope to see papers touching on initiatives in direct democracy; the art of changing that system, and the paradigms of inspiration. We would like to discuss how artivism will change society, possibles networks of artivists, ways of action.

STREAM 3: AUTHORSHIP Copy rights, ownership, patenting, and appropriation. (Creative commons, Copyleft,...)

STREAM 4: THE ART MARKET (new ways of) curating, spaces (physical and virtual) to show art, ways of making money: Marketing, the means of production, market forces and anti-market forces, the art market, and art and ethics.

CONTRIBUTIONS

Each day will be split into two parts. On Saturday and Sunday morning papers will be presented in each of the four streams, each lasting 20-30 minutes. Papers will be followed by a brief question period of 10-15 minutes. The afternoon will be divided into discussion periods in each of the four streams. During the weekend there will also be a separate space for workshops and performances.
There are therefore a variety of ways to contribute to the weekend. See below for details:

ACADEMIC PAPERS

The list of streams is not prescriptive, it simply outlines some of the issues we envisage arising given the general themes.

Please also send papers on other themes, these will be gratefully considered.

Submit an abstract of no more than 500 words. In addition please enclose a brief biography. Try to make this, along with your paper, as accessible as possible.

FACILITATED DISCUSSIONS (INVOLVEMENT AND SKILLS SHARING)

If you have an idea for one of the afternoon discussion topics that links in with one of the four streams then send in a your idea and think about one of the two types of involvement below:

If you'd like to take a more pro-active role during the conference, you might want to ADOPT a session - that is, prepare it in advance (suggest questions, main issues, reading material etc and propose the length of the session), arrive prepared for discussion themselves, attend it, and participate passionately in the debates.

We also need people to FACILITATE sessions - ideally a session should NOT be adopted and facilitated by the same person(s). Consider that facilitators are usually best if experienced in their task. Any which way, please get in touch.

== WORKSHOPS, ARTWORKS, AND PERFORMANCES ==

These will broadly tie in with one of the four streams above. Send a proposal [Max: A single side of A4], elaborate on: What your contribution will be e.g. a workshop, a performance, an artwork. How long you envisage it taking. Do you need any equipment or materials? Do you want to limit the number of participants? If so, how many? What do you hope will be born out of this? How do you propose to arrive at this end?

SATURDAY EVENING

DJ and VJ session: Call for DJs and VJs to send in samples so they might come and contribute to an evening of art in many guises. As well as other music, visual, perfomance, etc artist and Artivist.
Nb. Groups are welcome to contribute workshops, materials for display and/or distribution.

So, i want to transform my car into an art car and i need some help. I dont really want to change the body of my chevy malibu or glue things to my car. I want to paint my car. I have never done an art car before so this should be pretty fun. I need people to help me sand my car, anyone who knows about creating an art car, and anyone who shares my vision for the car can help me paint my car too.
The vision is one of peace, love, community, freedom, social justice, self-expression, light, free flowing, and lots and lots of fun!
No downers or pessimists needed here to help with the transformation of my purple malibu into a walking form of artistic slef expression. I have no idea what it will end up looking like in the end, and thats all part of the fun.
Who would like to help my transform my car?

I was smiling. There’s nothing wrong with smiling, is there? But what about if you’re in a cemetery & these are written on the cross of the people who passed away?
This is how it is at Merry Cemetery a totally unique place situated in Sapanta, county Maramures, NW of Romania.

People’s short stories like short fables, tragic stories are told with humor. This is what this place is about & what makes it unique is making fun-smiling about the end, our end & adding humor where usually there is only tears, pain & black.

I visited this place in the fall of 2004 & I had the opportunity to interview the artist who’s creating the crosses & the short poems. He is the second generation of folk artists, the woodcarver responsible for creating Sapantza’s Merry Cemetery
Announcing the launch of my FREE Seth D8 art print source!

As an artisan I have two categories I work in, digital illustration and commercial graphic design. I have chosen to freely share my digital illustration with anyone whom would like a print. I have plenty of commercial clients to satisfy my financial needs, plus I know I will always have all of needs met in every way before I have even asked. I love sharing my digital illustration because when a person is drawn to a piece incidental love is created and the love of creation is reflected back to me. And I love, LOVE!

I have uploaded a large selection of my digital art in hi resolution format to shutterfly.com, I have also set up a page their to access and order the prints. They offer everything from 4x6 prints to 24x36 inch prints in amazing detail and color. You can even create your very own Seth D8 art book of your favorite pieces, all for very reasonable rates. The only cost involved is the production of the prints, and I do not get a cut or add a commission to the service. It is at cost, and my art is completely free for personal use.

Please feel free and browse my current selection and get prints of anything you like, and the best part is you get to be part of the creative process by choosing exactly the correct size and media to suit your need. I will be uploading new hi resolution images a couple times a month so be sure and subscribe to my new Artisantastic illustration RSS feed. When I produce a new image it is immeaditly added to the feed, so you will always be up to date with my latest creations. And believe me I am a prolific artist creating new pieces on a daily basis.

A couple months ago I watched "In the Realm of the Unreal", the documentary on Darger. It opened my eyes in a new way to the world around me, making me aware of people who often don't seem to exist. Now when I walk past an apartment or lonely house with a light on late in the night I wonder what fantastic project they may be working on. A compulsion to look, visit or just know overwhelms me. It's really a wonderful feeling to think that something magical is going on right under our nose and we could discover it if we just opened our eyes.

Sadly though, I think many of the outsider works of isolationists like Darger wind up in the trash or get stuffed in the next generation's attic. That depresses me and I almost become panicky in a search to discover them. No luck yet, but I'll keep you posted.

From the affect this documentary had on me, I would love to know if anyone has other Outsider Artist documentaries they would recommend.

+ I am glad to take my place along the other "outsiders" here. I am a self taught artist, designer and illustrator living in Boston MA. I have also been working on an online webstore to share my art and philosophies with the world, I will be having my official launch on April 1st (Still lots of work to go) but my Artwarehouse is at a point where I feel people can get what I am up to by visiting it. The URL is http://artwarehouse.sethd8.com . I have never really gone to a school to learn anything I use, I have learned everything through real life experience, and the power of observation. I have posted some of my work in this tribes photo bank to introduce my collective creation to the group. I would love to hear from you!

One of the lead characters is an outsider artist curator and the plot involves her finding and trying to sign an outsider artist. Of course, the outsider artist is quite the character and the art itself is pretty interesting.

Great movie, good depiction of life and some of the characters in the South (which I am from). Highly recommend it.

Here's the movie site link:
http://www.sonyclassics.com/junebug/main.html

The art was created for the film based on the needs of the script. Interesting though, here's the artist's website:
The second issue of MungBeing Magazine, the only "hot potato" magazine on the internet, has hit the cyberstands!
It is now even more delicious with 70+ tantalizing pages of writing, art and music! That's over TWICE the material than before!

This bi-month, MungBeing is focusing on Outsider Art and Stuckism, two movements that are really causing a stir. And with good cause, as is demonstrated by Stuckist founders Charles Thomson, Billy Childish, Ella Guru, and Joe Machine, and driven further home by a selection of VERY talented Stuckist painters from around the world.

Our Outsider insider overheard a conversation with Gus Fink so that story is presented here, too. There's also Outsider artwork from Kelly Moore, Liz Parkinson, Ian Pyper and artists SO outside they don't even WANNA come in. How Childish.

he written works of the talented MungBeing collective continues to
shine with thematic pieces from Kevin Ausmus, Michael O'Briant, Jeb
Ebben, Rik Albatros, Starchy, Robert Dayton, Mark Teppo... the list goes on. And the comics section glows with beautiful work from Julian Lawrence, mckenzee, Suzanne Baumann, and Harold Penis.

Musically, there's an excursion into the delightful world of Outsider
Music, a world that includes Joe Meek and R. Stevie Moore, with Comfort Stand Records (www.comfortstand.com) and your host Otis Fodder. There's also an EXCLUSIVE TRACK and a conversation with the incomparable Naomi Hall.

And there's a recipe for LGBT Casserole.

WOW! We're pulling from a WELL STOCKED BeingPool here!

Stuckism and Outsider Art. Two great tastes that fit together like

Hello from your friendly neighborhood community founder here. I am proud to announce that the first issue of MungBeing, an online magazine, has been published today. The second issue, which will be released on 01 June, will be exploring the themes of outsider art and music. If you have something to submit, contact me by 18 May at jody@mungbeing.com.

****

The premiere issue of MungBeing has hit the cybershelves! http://www.mungbeing.com

MungBeing is an online bimonthly magazine containing artwork, short stories, articles, essays, music, recipes, poetry, comics, and fun-filled interactive features. The brainchild of Mark Givens (Wckr Spgt) and jody franklin (July Fourth Toilet), the debut edition features an interview with enigmatic philosopher and cult figure Robert Anton Wilson. A variety of wonderfully talented essayists and poets explore subjects such as debauchery in Mexico, the Oval Office, ghosts, cantaloupe pie, and poems that won't be written. Our wordsmiths include John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats), Robert Dayton (Canned Hamm), R.S. Deese (The Fossil Record), a plethora of Salmon Bosch alum, and members of The Misfit Library. The magazine is illustrated with myriad original visual art works and comics by artists such as Jason McLean, Michael O'Briant, Julian Lawrence (Drippytown Comics) and others. And as an added bonus, the first issue of MungBeing includes an unreleased song from The Congress (featuring John Darnielle and Mark Givens).

MungBeing aims to be a narrower, more focused Outsider Salon, a Low Art New Yorker (A Lorker), Juxtapoz's bookish third cousin, the sly Cubists to Pop Surrealism's witty Futurists, a poor substitute for sleep, the natural progression/extension of Salmon Bosch into the digital domain, and an outlet for some restless ideas.

It exists to entertain, amuse, provoke, and evoke; it is meant to be contemplated, absorbed, savored and enjoyed. It is the cantaloupe pie of cyberzines, magalogs and weberags. Your friends will want a slice of the pie, too, so share it because there's enough to go around.

Questions and inquiries may be directed to inquiries@mungbeing.com

The introduction is as follows:

-----
George Eastman House presents Photography on the Edge: Create and Be Recognized, an exhibition exploring a long overlooked aspect of outsider art — outsider photography, which are works created outside the established photographic field. The 15 artists surveyed include luminaries Howard Finster, Morton Bartlett, Henry Darger, and August Walla. Through their lenses and appropriated images, many of these artists have exposed their own worlds, often fueled by obsession and passion. For the first time the work of these artists has been brought together to examine the motivations, methods, and materials that allowed them to created work outside of the mainstream. Photography on the Edge, on view at Eastman House Jan. 22 through April 10, is a rare opportunity to experience their creations.
-----

On April 7, W. M. Hunt, director of photography, Ricco/Maresca Gallery, New York City, lectures in conjunction with the exhibition.

This is an art auction on May 14th to benefit the women of Juarez, Mexico (see below). We are looking for artists of all sorts to donate a piece of art inspired by one of the women to the auction. There is lots more info below!! Check it out.... it's a great way to donate your talents to a good cause and show off your art!!
400 Portraits: The Women of Ju?rez

The Situation
Approximately 400 girls and women have been killed in Juarez, Chihuahua,
Mexico, since 1993. Many of the serial victims were sexually assaulted
and mutilated. Although Mexican authorities have numerous suspects in
custody, the suspicious slayings and disappearances continue. Official
corruption and drug cartels are contributing factors. Juarez is a city
of 1.3 million, across the border from El Paso, Texas, rated
sixth-safest city in the United States.
The U.S. government has not gotten involved with the issue, claiming
that it is Mexico’s problem since the crimes have occurred within
Mexico’s borders. The Mexican government also refused to directly face
these atrocities, asserting that this is a U.S. issue because the
factories where many of these women work are owned by U.S. companies.
Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) have stepped in to address the
crisis and put pressure on the U.S. and Mexican governments to take
action.

Taking Action

400 Portraits: The Women of Juarez is an art auction and
awareness-raising event centered on the rape and murder of over 400
women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Our goals are to inform the public about the atrocities that have
impacted the lives of the people of Juarez and the roles of the
